Meet our Legislators – June 2023

With a focus on LGBTQA+ Rights for June we featured Rep. Jessica Benham and Rep. La’Tasha Mayes.

  • Representative for HD-36 (Allegheny County) since 2020, and Co-Chair of the LGBTQ+ Caucus
  • The first openly Autistic state legislator in Pennsylvania, and the first out LGBTQ+ woman in our General Assembly (City and State has named her the 4th most influential figure in Pennsylvania’s LGBTQ+ community in 2023!)

  • Stalwart advocate in Harrisburg fighting for equal rights for all, support for our union workers, and better access to healthcare

  • Representative for HD-24 (Allegheny County) since 2022 and Chair of the Joint Subcommittee on Women and Girls of Color
  • The first woman to represent her district, and the first out lesbian to serve in the General Assembly (named by Pittsburgh City Paper as a Pittsburgh Person of the Year in 2022!)
  • A writer whose work on reproductive justice has been published in several books
  • Founder and former president and CEO of New Voices for Reproductive Justice for 18 years and a nationally recognized advocate for the health and well-being of marginalized communities, especially Black women, femmes, girls, and gender-expansive folx
  • Former senior leader at the Groundswell Fund, the largest funder of reproductive justice and women of color, and Sistersong, the largest human rights advocacy group for Indigenous women and women of color
  • A West Philadelphia native who believes in the indefatigable spirit of women
