PHILADELPHIA, May 4, 2020 – Represent PA, the only organization in Pennsylvania focused on investing in Democratic women candidates for the PA legislature, today announced it would endorse six new candidates for state Senate and 18 new candidates for the House, in addition to endorsing incumbents. These primary endorsements reflect Represent’s goal of supporting strong women candidates who, if elected, can flip the legislature from Republican to Democrat. While maintaining its current seats, flipping the legislature requires Democrats to gain four Senate and nine House seats. Represent PA invested $205,500 in races across the state.
Today’s endorsements accompany the early support Represent PA provided in December 2019 for incumbent women candidates whose races were deemed “challenging” along with supporting progressive women candidates throughout 2019 who were running in special elections. This equals investments in a total of 43 women and $251,000 so far this cycle. At least one more round of support is planned before November.
“Being able to invest more than $250,000 this cycle, compared to $50,000 at this point in the cycle in 2018, means so much to these candidates who’ve not only been working to get their names out there, but have been doing it in ways that take more money because of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Represent PA Executive Director Christine Jacobs.
Using a rigorous endorsement process, each application is reviewed and rated on a scale that considers response quality, alignment to Represent PA’s progressive values, experience, campaign strength and district “flip-ability.” Throughout the cycle, Represent PA collects its own data, and considers input from various political organizations across Pennsylvania including Emily’s List, Emerge PA and Turn PA Blue.
“Protecting our democratic women incumbents and electing more democratic women to the House and Senate is our mission,” said Represent PA Political Chair Meg Pritchard, who develops and leads the endorsement process. “As I read the applications of these very capable candidates, I’m thrilled to think that these women will soon be setting the agenda and passing legislation in Harrisburg.”
Represent PA essentially operates as a mutual fund for elections – raising money, analyzing races and candidates – investing in districts where it can have the most impact. For this election cycle, Represent PA is pleased to announce its endorsement of the following candidates:
